UK Parliament Members Delegation Visits Moscow

A meeting between Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation, and Lord Waverley, member of the UK House of Lords, was held in Moscow on 20 December. Lord Waverley arrived in Moscow as part of the British Parliament delegation and held several important meetings.

The meeting participants discussed progress in establishing cooperation between the Parliaments of Russia and the United Kingdom. «After a long break, this visit emphasizes the importance of an open dialogue between the parliaments of our countries in order to restore relations,» said Mr. Kobyakov, Adviser to the Russian President.

An agreement was reached to continue the dialogue and expressed confidence that only an open discussion of pressing issues and challenges would lead to effective strategic cooperation.

«Both our countries strive to build a mutually beneficial relationship. We are interested in the development of comprehensive cooperation/ s. At this time, we have reached agreement to organize conferences for the youth and events on gender equality. We are looking into the possibility of organizing a follow-up visit of Russian lawmakers to London, which would contribute to the continued dialogue with the goal to bring understanding of strategic interaction between our countries,» said Member of the British Parliament Lord Waverley.

The meeting was held as part of the visit of the UK Parliament members to Moscow. During the visit, members of the House of Lords Lord Waverley, Lord Balfe, Lord Browne met with Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.

During the meetings, an agreement was reached to continue the dialogue within the PACE and the Arctic Council. The parties also discussed the possibility to hold a conference in 2020 to protect the historical memory of the Second World War, with the participation of the European countries, the USA, Israel, and other countries. During the meeting, the issue of Brexit and its consequences was also touched upon. Mr. Volodin emphasized that Russia would favour a continuing dialogue with the UK in any Brexit unfolding scenario.

On 24 April 2018, the Roscongress Foundation and Lord Waverley, , signed a cooperation agreement. The main subject of the agreement was to promote cooperation between the parties to develop a mutual dialogue between the communities of the Russian Federation and the UK.
