Within the scope of the Russian BRICS Chairmanship in 2020, the Round Table “Consumer Protection in the e-Commerce Age” was held in Moscow on March 13th, organized by the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-Being (Rospotrebnadzor) and the Roscongress Foundation.
The Meeting was attended by the Heads and Experts of
relevant Ministries and Departments of the BRICS countries, as well as by
representatives of the Eurasian Economic Commission, UNCTAD, OECD and other
international organizations and public associations.
The experts discussed a wide range of issues of utmost relevance for the modern society, focused on the benefits and risks of e-commerce, the security of payments in cross-border trade, the prevention of fraud, the effective online resolution of disputes, timely information provision to the cross-border trade consumers and the protection of consumers of digital goods and services in particular.
“These issues seem
to be of utmost relevance for the consumers in the BRICS countries, their
importance being enshrined in the UN Guidelines on Consumer Protection, – Anna Popova, the Head of Rospotrebnadzor, stated at the event - a discussion on this issue addresses
major modern challenges faced by the international consumer movement.
I would like to note that expert discussions are taking into account the practical experience of their statutory regulation in the BRICS countries, which will allow us to successfully fill the existing gaps and resolve conflicts pertaining to legal regulation of many issues.”
The experts affirmed the importance of exchanging
international experience, taking into account the transformation of the legal
environment and the prospects for legislation harmonization in the field of
consumer protection based on international law.
Following the Round Table discussion, proposals of the
BRICS countries were articulated aimed at developing international cooperation
on consumer protection in the digital economy.
