Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit 2019 Results

The second Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit took place 9–11 July in Yekaterinburg. GMIS 2019 was organised by the UAE Ministry of Energy, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, the Roscongress Foundation, the Government of the Sverdlovsk Region and the Russian Export Center.

GMIS 2019 focused primarily on nature-inspired technology (bionics and bionic design) and its effective implementation in production and economic processes.

«The Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit brought together the world’s leading experts in the field of industrial development and technology resulting from the fourth industrial revolution. I am sure that the high standard of discussions will contribute to scientific development and stimulate technological transformations and the establishment of long-term partnerships», Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation Anton Kobyakov said.

More than 40 events took place as part of the business programme and included panel sessions, business lunches, pitch session Business Priority, dialogues with leaders, seminars, and presentations. GMIS 2019 discussions focused on topics such as digital transformation and green technologies, smart cities, the development of low-carbon manufacturing, safety in industrial automation, and robotics and artificial intelligence.

The official GMIS 2019 opening ceremony took place on day 1.

«We have gathered at GMIS 2019 to think about the challenges posed by the Fourth Industrial Revolution,» Chairman of the GMIS 2019 Organising Committee Badr Al Olama said.

Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Kozak said: «Timing GMIS to coincide with the main industrial exhibition INNOPROM will serve to effectively strengthen international industrial cooperation and become a unique discussion platform for the joint identification of pertinent problems related to industrialisation.

«Russia’s desire to develop a modern manufacturing sector using 4IR technologies has made it an ideal venue for GMIS in 2019,» UAE Minister of Energy and Industry Suheil Mohamed Al Mazrouei said.

According to Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Li Yong «the fourth industrial revolution will affect all of us and expert discussions on these issues at GMIS can help ensure that we steer towards sustainable development».

«A large-scale discussion is unfolding at GMIS 2019 around how to make the development of nature-inspired technologies a priority for all countries», Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov said.

The key event of the Summit was a plenary session on the New Era of Manufacturing: Manufacturing, Nature-Inspired Technology and Their Role in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. UAE Minister of Energy Suheil Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Mubadala Investment Company H.E. Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, United Nations Industrial Development Organization General Director (UNIDO) Li Yong, and Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov all took part in the session.

President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin opened the Summit plenary session with words of welcome: «I would like to welcome you to one of Russia’s largest historical centres of science, education, and industry, to Yekaterinburg and the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit. For the second time in a row, it has brought together representatives of government, business, science, and non-profit organisations from across the entire globe. And it has, in fact, already made a serious bid to become a popular international platform for in-depth discussion of the challenges facing the new technological era».

The Summit also included events such as a ministerial panel sessions, a business breakfast of the Russian Export Center, and a «Pitch Session for a Billion,» which was treated to the 15 best Russian and international start-ups in artificial intelligence, nature-inspired technologies, and social engineering.

In addition, GMIS held an award ceremony for the winners of the Urals Federal District stage of the Exporter of the Year Award. District winners now have the opportunity to take part in the final, where they will compete for the title of the country’s best exporters with leaders from other federal districts. The prize has been organised by the Russian Export Center JSC.

REC General Director Andrey Slepnev said: «The opportunities that are opening up for us as a part of GMIS 2019 will make it possible for Russia to more effectively integrate into international cooperation chains.»

Prizes were also awarded at the Summit as part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Initiative for Global Prosperity. Prizes were awarded to projects making the greatest contribution to the resolution of the real problems facing humanity.

GMIS 2019 Sponsors included Gazprom, the National Engineering Corporation, METALLOINVEST, Norilsk Nickel, the State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM, the Russian Copper Company, the Russian Direct Investment Fund, the United Metallurgical Company, Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, OAO TMK, Philip Morris International, R-Pharm, Rossetti, Sberbank, and VOSTOKUGOL.

Official closing remarks were delivered by the Chairman of the GMIS Organising Committee Badr Al Olama, and Deputy Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization Hiroshi Kuniyoshi.

«I would like to express my gratitude to the Government of the Russian Federation for supporting this Summit and demonstrating commitment to its goals. I would like to thank the Roscongress Foundation for organising the event, for providing logistical services, and for ensuring the success of the event», Mr. Kuniyoshi said.

More than 3,300 delegates and media representatives from 63 foreign countries took part in the Summit in total. The largest delegations were from the United Arab Emirates, China, Germany, Austria, and the USA.

The Summit was attended by over 120 heads of foreign companies. Among them, CLAAS CEO Ralph Bendish, President of Huaibei Mining Group Co Ltd Zhou Quanbin, Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Mubadala Investment Company H.E. Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak.

In addition, over 250 heads of Russian companies participated in the event, including Chairman of the Board of Directors of AFK Sistema Vladimir Yevtushenkov, General Director of the State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM Alexey Likhachev, Chairman of the Board of Directors of TMK, and Vice President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Dmitry Pumpyansky.

Russian and foreign officials taking part in GMIS 2019 include Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Russian Federation Dmitry Kozak; Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov; nine heads of constituent entities of the Russian Federation; and nine foreign ministers from eight countries (Armenia, Belarus, Zimbabwe, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, United Arab Emirates, Serbia, and Uzbekistan), and five heads of foreign diplomatic corps in the Russian Federation.

The Summit was covered by 367 media representatives (354 — Russian, 13 — foreign) from 90 organisations (80 — Russian, 10 — foreign). Journalists from 3 countries (not including Russia) took part in Summit: India, China, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Summit was held at the Yekaterinburg-EXPO International Exhibition Centre. GMIS 2019 was the first event to be held at the Urals’ largest exhibition venue.
