В рамках подготовки к саммитам ШОС и БРИКС в Челябинске проведут серию экологических мероприятий

A series of measures designed to improve the environmental situation in the city will be held in Chelyabinsk as part of the preparation for the SCO and BRICS summits which will take place in 2019–2020.

According to the Governor of the Chelyabinsk region, Boris Dubrovsky, a roadmap has been drafted for improving the environmental situation, the air quality, urban greening and the city’s amenities.

In particular, the project involves environmental protection measures at industrial plants on reducing harmful emissions. The city will purchase 75 buses running on natural gas in order to make its public transport more environmentally friendly. The authorities are also planning to carry out a revegetation programme at a municipal landfill in Metallurgical district of Chelyabinsk and to create more green and safe public spaces by cleaning the Miass river, constructing an embankment, renovating the sewer at the Igumenka river and planting 10,000 trees. Apart from these measures the roadmap includes an independent environmental inspection of the Mechel Group factories and further development of measures on reducing the harmful impacts on the environment for 2019–2025.

’Our project will significantly improve the environmental situation in the city. I believe that it is crucial to act on this situation and implement the programme prior to the summits and Russia’s chairmanship at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2019–2020 and at the BRICS bloc in 2020,’ said Boris Dubrovsky.
