On 8 September 2022, the Clean Games, a team competition to clean up
green spaces, was held on the shore of Truda Bay on Russky Island as part of
the 7th Eastern Economic Forum. Participants competed in rubbish collection and
sorting, and the winners received prizes.
45 people from nine countries took part in the interactive clean-up.
They managed to clear 500 kg of rubbish from the bay shore in half an hour. The
event was held in a mini-festival format, with music, a presenter, a photo
area, a picnic, and an award ceremony. The Clean Games was a new and
interesting format that turned the participants’ attitudes towards cleaning up.
The campaign showed that cleaning up rubbish is not always a boring and
unpleasant event, but can be an exciting and fun quest.
The winner of the competition was the team ‘Zvezda’ from Bolshoi Kamen.
In spring, they won the Clean Games in their city as part of the Primorye
Cleanliness Cup, an eco-volunteer tournament. It was a super final for them,
where they faced the winners of the Clean Games from Dalnerechensk, who ended
up taking third place. As a prize, they received certificates to one of Vladivostok’s
best restaurants, Zuma. Second place went to the team from the Higher School of
Economics.
“Holding the Clean Games as part
of the Eastern Economic Forum was a challenge for us. Naturally we fear that
nobody would show up. We had serious doubts that competing in rubbish clean up
could be interesting for serious people and businesspeople, when they came here
to attend a business forum. Apparently, it is actually interesting!” said
Dmitry Ioffe, founder of the Clean Games.
Immediately after the competition and before the awards ceremony, the
Clean Games eco-project signed an agreement with the Algeria Youth Ambassadors
Foundation to co-host the event in Algeria.
The EEF 2022 Clean Games were supported by the Roscongress Foundation;
Friends for Leadership, an international community of youth opinion leaders and
entrepreneurs; Russia – Land of Opportunity; the Government of Primorsky
Region; and Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service (VSUES).
