Ulyanovsk Region is located in the center of the Middle Volga region, in the south-east of the European part of Russia, and is part of the Volga Federal District.
The economy of the region is characterized by a high degree of industrial development. The main industry is mechanical engineering (more than 50% of the total volume of manufacturing industries). The main areas of activity are aircraft, automobile, machine tool, heavy energy and transport engineering.
The Ulyanovsk region is a major transport hub. Important air, rail and road communications pass through the region, and the region has the only port special economic zone in Russia with a special procedure for customs clearance of goods.
The dominant economic activities of the region are:
mechanical engineering, including aircraft construction, instrument making, machine tool construction, automotive industry;
agriculture and food industry;
electric power industry, including the segment of renewable energy sources (wind, solar);
construction materials industry and glass industry.
