Kostroma region is located in the center of the European part of Russia. It borders on the Vologda Region in the north, the Ivanovo and Nizhny Novgorod Regions in the south, the Yaroslavl Region in the west, and the Kirov Region in the east.
There are forest resources and peat deposits.

In agriculture, animal husbandry of the dairy and meat direction, pig breeding, poultry farming, beekeeping, crop production with a predominance of growing forage crops, and flax production are developed.

The dominant economic activities of the region are:

• textile (linen and others);
• woodworking industry;
• mechanical engineering (production of excavators, machine tools, equipment for the textile, chemical, food, woodworking industries);
• food industry.
