The Astrakhan Region is located in the south-east of the East European Plain and is part of the Southern Federal District. It is washed by the Caspian Sea.
The region is part of the Volga Economic Region and is an industrial region, which is distinguished by the production of gas, gas condensate, table salt, the production of sulfur, metal-cutting machines and floating drilling rigs for large sea depths; the production of wool, vegetables, fish and seafood. The Kapustin Yar test site (Znamensk) and the Caspian Military Flotilla are located on the territory of the region.
