The Republic of Khakassia is located in the southwestern part of Eastern Siberia, within the Sayano-Altai Mountain system and is part of the Siberian Federal District.
Khakassia is one of the unique regions of the Russian Federation in terms of natural resources, where iron, gold, mineral and radon waters, barite, marble, and granite are extracted. Deposits of copper, phosphorite, lead, zinc, asbestos, gypsum, jade, and jadeite have been explored. There are proven reserves of oil and gas.
The Republic has significant resources of fresh underground and surface water. There are almost all types of water bodies — mountain rivers, karovye lakes, foothill rivers, water bodies with a flat type of regime. The main waterway is the Yenisei River.
The region has a fairly developed transport infrastructure, which is represented by rail, air (JSC «„Abakan Airport“» of international significance), and road transport. The leading mode of transport is rail, which accounts for 99% of the cargo turnover of the republic.
