Heads of Rosmorrechflot and Rosmorport Introduce Mir Tall Ship’s Round-the-World Voyage at SPIEF 2021

Andrey Lavrishchev, head of Rosmorrechflot, and Alexander Smirnov, the general director of Rosmorport will publicly present SAILING THE GLOBE, the circumnavigation of the Mir sailing ship at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and discuss the route of the voyage. The presentation will take place on 4 June in the media work area of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum press centre.

The start of the round-the-world voyage from the Big Port of St. Petersburg will be given during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June 2022. Mir is expected to return to her home port on Victory Day, 9 May 2023. Expedition SAILING THE GLOBE is timed to the celebration of the World Sea Day in Russia in 2023 and the 78th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The journey will help strengthen the international presence and prestige of Russia. It will symbolize peace and goodwill, as well as raise the prestige of maritime professions.

Vitaly Savelyev, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, is the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the circumnavigation.

The three-masted training frigate Mir is considered to be the fastest tall ship in the world. Its maximum speed under sails was recorded at 21 knots (38.9 km/h).

The proposed itinerary includes passing the Northern Sea Route, visiting the seaport of Vladivostok on the dates of the annual Eastern Economic Forum, sailing from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean through the Drake Passage around Cape Horn, visiting seaports in countries en route, including South Korea, Japan, China, Germany, France, Denmark, Great Britain, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and Cuba.

According to experts, Mir will have to cover about 37,000 nautical miles or about 68,500 kilometers, which is more than one and a half times the length of the equator. Cadets of various maritime universities and passengers will journey onboard the sailing vessel.

Mir’s circumnavigation was organized by Rosmorport, Association of Training Sailboats of Russia, and the Roscongress Foundation with the support from the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, Rosmorrechflot, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, FSS of Russia, Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, Rossotrudnichestvo, Rosmolodezh, Atomflot, Governments of Saint-Petersburg, Primorye Territory, and Admiral Makarov State Marine Engineering University.
