On 28 April, Foreign
Minister Sergey Lavrov chaired an extraordinary meeting of the BRICS Ministers
of Foreign Affairs held at the initiative of the Russian side via
videoconference.
The Ministers exchanged
views on the current situation in the face of the negative impact of the
outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic on international relations and global economy
. They discussed ways of combining efforts to counter its spread and overcoming
financial, trade, economic and social consequences of the pandemic.
The Ministers highlighted the
importance of further deepening BRICS strategic partnership and enhancing cooperation
on the three pillars: peace and security, economy and finance, cultural and
humanitarian contacts.
They also discussed current issues
of developing five-sided cooperation, including the event calendar of the Russia’s
BRICS Chairmanship in 2020.
