Development of non-commodity exports: a focal point for expert discussion at the upcoming Russia–Kazakhstan forum

Russia and Kazakhstan are major trade partners, and both nations have the development of non-commodity exports high on their respective agendas. Increasing the segment’s share in the bilateral trade volume is a priority and a key success driver for future partnership relations between the two countries. This topic will be the focus of the panel themed «Development of non-commodity exports between Russia and Kazakhstan», to be held within the 16th Russia—Kazakhstan Interregional Cooperation Forum organised by the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation and the Roscongress Foundation.

Igor Zhuk, Senior Vice President of REC will moderate the panel, which will be attended by officials of the Eurasian Economic Commission, the Novosibirsk Region, the Smolensk Region, and the Altai Territory of Russia, as well as representatives of the Chamber of International Commerce of Kazakhstan, NGOs Business Russia and OPORA RUSSIA, the Union of Transport, Freight Forwarding, and Logistics Companies of Siberia, the Union of International Road Carriers of the Republic of Kazakhstan (KazATO), experts from Tomsk Polytechnic University (a national research university) and Tomsk State University, and representatives of Samruk-Kazyna, KazakhExport, Kazakh Invest, Globalink Logistics, VMK, Angioline, and GORMASHEXPORT.

«The topic was have selected for discussion is very wide-ranging: it covers the mutually beneficial development of the agro-industrial sector, the development of high-tech production facilities, and logistics sharing opportunities,» said Mr Zhuk. «Our countries are in many ways similar and we have very much in common, and that concerns not only our past and our present but, I am confident, our future as well. We have very much to offer to each other. At the same time, it is important for both sides to understand its own interests and specifics, and for that an ongoing, motivated and open dialogue is needed.»

The panel participants will be able to discuss successful joint projects and the development of a service economy — tourism and education. Investment projects and launching jointly operated production facilities is also a key topic. The participants will discuss some pressing issues as well, such as the overdue regulation reform, reduction of trade barriers, fair competition, antimonopoly regulation, and public procurement within the Eurasian Economic Union. The panel will address some practical issues, including varied VAT rates and cases of regional export centres supporting supply chains.
