The Organizing
Committee of the Russian Federation’s Presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization in 2019–2020 and in the BRICS association in 2020 met in Moscow.
Aide to the President of Russia Yury Ushakov chaired the meeting and the
speakers were: Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation, Deputy
Chairman — Executive Secretary of the Organizing Committee Anton Kobyakov,
Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Ryabkov, Deputy
Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Igor Morgulov, Deputy Finance
Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Storchak, Governor of Chelyabinsk
Region Boris Dubrovsky, Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Roscongress
Foundation Alexander Stuglev and others.
The discussion
mainly focused on preparing the infrastructure of Chelyabinsk for major international
events in 2020. Today, the primary efforts are put in the construction of the
summits’ main venue Taganay 2020, reconstruction of the Balandino airport
complex, development of new hotels and reconstruction of existing ones, and
road infrastructure.
«We must promptly
solve the issues of municipal improvement, environment, city roads and the
modernisation of public transport by converting it to gas fuel and setting up
the appropriate infrastructure. In general, all works are on schedule. We work
ahead of the schedule where possible,» said Boris Dubrovsky, Governor of
Chelyabinsk Region.
Also one of the
most critical issues in the preparation of Chelyabinsk is a comprehensive
improvement of the environmental situation. In this regard, some solutions are
mapped out: reclamation of the city dump, management of air quality, cleaning
of the Miass riverbed and the improvement of the city embankment.
«Holding global
international events in Russia sets the task of addressing even more ambitious
challenges. Chelyabinsk Region is one of the most alarming in terms of its air
quality. That is why I think it is necessary to appoint it as a pilot region on
issues of quoting harmful emissions to the air. I am confident that
comprehensive measures and consolidated efforts of federal control and
regulatory bodies, regional and local authorities will significantly improve
the quality of the environment in the region in the years ahead,» said Anton
Kobyakov, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation.
Also, the meeting presented the agenda for the Russian SCO and BRICS presidency.
Chelyabinsk is the designated location for the Council of Heads of SCO Member States session and BRICS leaders meeting in 2020, in accordance with the Presidential Decree No. 110 ‘On the Organizational Committee for Preparation and Provision of the Russian Federation’s Presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2019–2020 and in the BRICS association in 2020’.
The Roscongress
Foundation was exclusively appointed the executor of services procurement
performed by the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation
and related to the preparation and provision of the Russian
Federation’s chairmanship in the SCO and the BRICS.
