VEB.RF to hold session on urban economy at Russian Investment Forum in Sochi

7 February 2019
ВЭБ.РФ проведет сессию по городской экономике на Российском инвестиционном форуме в Сочи

As part of the Russian Investment Forum business programme, a VEB.RF session will take place on 14 February 2019 entitled «The Economics of Urban Comfort».

The agenda for developing a modern urban economy is a theme that cuts across the entire development institute system. Seventy-four per cent of the population of Russia live in the country’s 1,114 towns and cities. These places play a key role in economic competition. They are where service industries grow, and where high-tech export-oriented SMEs are founded.

Towns and cities in Russia largely encounter similar problems which impede growth. VEB is currently working on creating a new portfolio covering various areas of the urban economy, including projects to improve public transport, traffic safety, housing and utilities, energy efficiency, processing solid household waste, and healthcare and medicine. In order to thoroughly examine this agenda, VEB is organizing an expert discussion on issues surrounding urban development.

Five case studies covering different areas will be presented at the session. These will focus on the experience of transforming single-industry towns, creating public spaces, establishing a high-tech production sector, cooperation between major businesses and the cities in which they are based, and the socioeconomic effects of developing infrastructure. The speakers will share their experience of implementing urban development projects, and discuss the possibility of replicating them in other regions.

The moderator will be VEB.RF Chairman Igor Shuvalov.

Speakers will include Andrey Sharonov (Skolkovo Moscow School of Management), Sergey Kuznetsov (Head of Novokuznetsk in Kemerovo Region), Rustam Minnikhanov (President of the Republic of Tatarstan), Natalia Fishman (Aide to the President of the Republic of Tatarstan), Andrey Bezrukov (Vice President for Strategic Development at GS Group), Alexander Kitaev (Head of the Gusev City Administration in Kaliningrad Region), Dmitry Konov (Chairman of the Management Board of SIBUR); Alexander Moor (Governor of Tyumen Region), Oleg Belozerov (Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Executive Board of Russian Railways), and Stanislav Voskresensky (Governor of Ivanovo Region).

Venue: Sochi Media Centre, Pushkin hall

Date and time: 14 February 2019, 14:00–15:30.

The business programme is available on the official Forum website. The Russian Investment Forum is organized by the Roscongress Foundation.
