The United World Wrestling [UWW] meeting, held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, has voted in favour of holding 2022 Freestyle, Women’s, and Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships in Krasnoyarsk and 2021 Junior World Championships in Ufa. The Roscongress Foundation’s sports division will participate in the preparation and hosting both tournaments.
«For the first time, Russia is to host the two largest wrestling tournaments in one Olympic cycle,» said Georgy Bryusov, Vice President of UWW Europe and Deputy CEO of the Roscongress Foundation. Krasnoyarsk has announced its intention to host the championship just eight months ago at the UWW’s Golden Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin, the tournament that celebrated its 30th anniversary this winter. Even at that time, wrestlers from 25 countries and numerous UWW members noted how much Krasnoyarsk improved just before the winter Universiade 2019, the renovated sports and urban infrastructure of the city. Combined, region’s wrestling reputation, traditions established by the great Ivan Yarygin on the banks of the Yenisei River, and continued effort to promote the application made Krasnoyarsk a hands-down winner. At that, Ufa competed with Belgrade and Sofia. The comprehensive wrestling development programme of the region under the initiative of the Radiy Khabirov, Acting Head of the Republic of Bashkortostan, became the decisive factor in favour of Ufa. The programme focuses on including wrestling in the schools’ curriculum and promoting grass roots wrestling, and the Junior World Championship is to play a unique role in this effort.
The sports division of the Roscongress Foundation has already operated the 2018 European Championship in Kaspiysk, 2018 Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships in Perm, and the Freestyle Wrestling World Cup Yakutsk 2019.
Krasnoyarsk already hosted the Freestyle Wrestling
World Championship in 1997. The 2002 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championship
took place in Moscow. The capital of Russia also hosted 2010 World Wrestling
Championships featuring freestyle, women’s and Greco-Roman tournaments. For the
first time, Russia is to host the Junior World Championship.
