During the business programme of the Global Fishery Forum, a New Russian Fisheries Development Strategy conference was held to present and discuss the new strategy for developing Russian fisheries.

Participants included Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Arkady Dvorkovich, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery Ilya Shestakov, Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region Igor Orlov, President of the All-Russian Association of Fish Breeders, Entrepreneurs and Exporters (VARPE) German Zverev, Chief Executive Officer of BAADER Petra Baader, Director of External Communications of the Russian Export Centre Vera Podguzova, and other members of the industry and scientific community.

Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich pointed out that “the Russian Government will expand its support for Russian fish exports and will preserve the current budget subsidies for the industry. Fish industry exports are crucial to the entire sector. We will continue expanding the support for exports of your produce”.

The conference provided a long-term strategy for Russian fisheries development up to 2030 developed by the Federal Agency for Fishery in cooperation with industry experts. The main objective of the strategy is to raise investments, transform and improve the infrastructure and processing.

The main anticipated result of the strategic programmes would be an increase of over RUB 600 billion in private investments into the industry between 2018 and 2025, a doubling of the fisheries industry contribution to the national GDP, renovation of the fishing fleet and a greater share of high added-value produce to 30% of the total.

Speakers also discussed Russia’s unique opportunities for attracting foreign investments into the industry. The agenda included assessing the potential of key global fish markets. Industry representatives voiced various recommendations and comments at the conference, discussing implementation and further improvement of the fisheries industry development strategy.

The Global Fishery Forum and Seafood Expo took place on 14–16 September at the Lenexpo Exhibition Complex in St Petersburg. The business programme of the Forum included a plenary session, several conferences and seven panel discussions.
