Санкт-Петербург станет местом притяжения крупных международных событий в 2022 году

The Northern Capital will host a number of significant international events in 2022. On 15–23 August, St. Petersburg will welcome the 29th International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM). The decision was made by the General Assembly of the International Mathematical Union in São Paulo, Brazil; the St. Petersburg bid won 83–67 against Paris. (The General Assembly is scheduled for 12–13 August.)

The International Congress of Mathematicians is one of the most influential conventions of the leading mathematicians of the world. The first Congress was held in 1897 in Zürich, and since then has been organized every four years under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) on rotation. Our country hosted the event once: in 1966 Moscow welcomed the 15th ICM.

The IMU forecasts the participation of about 5,000 people in the 29th ICM. The Congress decides on awarding the most significant medals in the field of mathematics, including Fields, Nevanlinna, Gauss, Chern medals and prizes. Since 2010, the closing ceremony of the Congress awards the Leelavati Prize for popularization of mathematics.

According to the Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation Anton Kobyakov, Russian fundamental science and higher education will receive a wide range of opportunities to promote their achievements and advance to the international level through the preparation and hosting this leading applied science event.

«St. Petersburg today has all the necessary infrastructure and solid experience in holding such significant international events,» he added.

The World Energy Congress is another key event in St. Petersburg in 2022. World Energy Council (WEC) announced Russia the hosting country of the 25th Congress. Portugal and USA also submitted their bids to host the event. Leaders of the global oil and gas industry, ministers of producing countries, experts and media representatives are to participate in the event, which will be held from 11 to 15 June. The Congress brings together more than 4,000 participants.

The event has been held every three years since 1924. Istanbul hosted the last Congress in 2016, and in 2019 the event will take place in Abu Dhabi.
