‘Tiger Train’ Unveiled in Vladivostok

5 September 2022
Во Владивостоке состоялась презентация «тигриного» поезда

A thematic train dedicated to the Amur tiger was officially presented at the Vladivostok Railway Station on 5 September 2022 as part of the events of the 2nd International Tiger Forum. The information campaign aims to draw public attention to environmental protection problems and the protection of endangered species.

The event was attended by 2nd International Tiger Forum Organizing Committee Chairman and Russian Minister of Justice Konstantin Chuychenko, Russian Railways CEO and Chairman of the Board Oleg Belozerov, and Roscongress Foundation CEO and Chairman of the Board Alexander Stuglev.

«To increase the number of tigers, we not only need to implement measures for their protection. It’s crucial to organize systematic work on environmental awareness and develop volunteering programmes to support the conservation of the tiger and its habitats,» Chuychenko said.

A Rossiya train that runs between Moscow and Vladivostok has been transformed into a tribute to tigers. Twelve of the railcars are decorated on the outside with painted portraits of adult tigers and cubs. Inside the train there are posters with information about rare animals species in Russia that need priority measures to be adopted for their restoration. In addition to the Amur tiger, this includes Persian and Far Eastern leopards, snow leopards, saiga antelopes, bison, argali mountain sheep, and others. All of them are among the 13 priority animal species in the National Ecology Project.

«Russian Railways is doing a lot of work to preserve biodiversity throughout the country, and especially in the east of our country. Over the past year alone, the company has implemented 16 projects to preserve and restore the number of rare animals. The Rossiya train was purposely chosen for the current campaign because it travels along the longest passenger railway route in the world. Essentially, the train will convey the idea of preserving and studying rare animal species across the whole country, from Vladivostok to Moscow,» Belozerov said.

«One of the key focus areas for the Roscongress Foundation is to promote the social agenda and support charitable, public, and environmental projects. And now we are thrilled to be involved in such an important and noble cause — the protection of the Amur tiger, this unique predator. Its preservation and the preservation of the planet’s wealth and biological diversity is our job and duty to future generations. The thematic train that we are launching today is an outstanding project that is being implemented to promote the image of the rare feline and create a caring attitude towards these animals and their habitat. I am certain that the train has a solid educational mission: to teach passengers about the problem of tiger conservation and the efforts that our country is making to protect and study it,» Stuglev said.

The thematic Rossiya train takes seven days to travel from Vladivostok to Moscow and makes 131 stops in small and large cities.

«It would be difficult to find a more equally successful and effective way to draw attention to the issue of Amur tiger conservation than the new thematic train. The train will travel across the country and hundreds of thousands of people will see it, who will then share their impressions with their friends and relatives,» Amur Tiger Centre General Director Sergey Aramilev said.
